Lesley Cummins, Principal

Dear Cochiti Families,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Lesley Cummins and I am excited to be the new principal of Cochiti. I live here in Albuquerque with my husband and two children, Corazon and Tigerlilly. We also have a son, daughter in law, and brand new grandson, in Colorado. I am delighted to be a back at Cochiti.

For those of you who don’t know me, I started teaching in 1994. I have taught second through eighth grade at Whittier ES, Duranes, ES, Washington MS, and Cochiti ES.  Last year, I did my administrative internship at Lowell ES and I was the dean of students at Zia ES. As a teacher, my focus has been on bilingual education and math.

One of the most important aspects of my work as Cochiti’s principal is building solid relationships with students, families and teachers. It will be very important to me to be in the hallways, classrooms and on the playground getting to know your child(ren). In my past experience, I have found that kids really appreciate a person who genuinely invests in them and who is fair in decision making.

Also, it will be particularly important to me to make sure that your child and you feel safe at school. If you ever have a concern about something or a question about a specific situation or procedure please do not hesitate to call or email me. Communication is paramount in a school. For this reason, I will always encourage you to contact your child’s teacher or me with questions.

I feel very lucky to be following Mrs. Herrera as the principal of Cochiti. She took a lot of pride in everything she did here. I will be in touch with Mrs. Herrera often so that we can make this a very smooth transition for students, teachers and families. Cochiti is a school that has many things to be proud of. I thank you in advance for welcoming me as a part of this great community!
